#gardening
Within the last several days, after the holidays and all, I have been taking a lot of time to consider what to do with the 2025 gardening projects that I’ve been thinking about for a year. We all know, it’s not easy to grow a lot of crops. It’s not easy to germinate enough, it’s not that easy to buy enough transplants and water, fertilize, etc. Gardening is high risk and high reward, being one of the biggest factors that I decided to try and save these onion seedlings from too much winter brutality. I will possibly have more to say about onion seedlings surviving the winter outside, but mine weren’t firmly rooted and were in fact buried and growing lying down.
More Onion Seedling Info To Date
These first two pictures were taken on 12/26. I once again moved the pots for outdoor sunlight even amid a brutal cold.

On 12/27, I moved the plants outside again for another day of outdoor light. It was a lot warmer than the last week that was generally about 29 degrees at all times. I had to tilt the pots in order for the entire amount of light to get in.
The seedlings by this time definitely showed significant growth, all 6 of them.
December 28 Photos before rain
Pot with 4 onion seedlings. These pictures were taken as soon as I put the pots outside today. It was raining at the time I took this picture but not much water is shown in the pictures here.

Final remarks about Winter Stratification
At this time, I still don’t believe the onion seedlings would survive a full winter and come back in spring. Although we know that bulbous plants are typically perennials, even garlic, or onion seeds can still and would be better off doing cold stratification but what about on seedlings this size? It’s something to try next year, but I think that it’s too much of a risk to leave or attempt to have seedlings out during the winter. It’s one thing to mention about gardening is that there is so much cross-applicable knowledge in the skill. There is always more insight within each segmented crop. My ultimate goal with the onion seed project is to figure out if it’s a good idea or not to put onion seedlings out with garlic for cold stratification! By the time the cold is over in my zone, I will be able to say that if the onions are thriving this dynamically, it’s because they were given a lot of warm periods as well as extra water.
